Toddler Early Morning Waking: How to Get a Later Start

The 5am start is one of the toughest sleep problems because there's no easy bribe at dawn. Usually it's a mix of body clock, light, and an over-early or over-late bedtime.

Black out the room completely

Even a little dawn light tells a toddler it's morning. Proper blackout blinds are the single biggest fix.

Use an okay-to-wake clock

A light that turns colour at a set time gives them a clear, visual rule for when the day starts.

Check bedtime isn't too late

Overtired toddlers often wake earlier, not later. An earlier bedtime can paradoxically buy a later morning.

Keep pre-6am boring

No screens, no big breakfast, no playtime before the target time. Make early waking unrewarding.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my toddler wake up so early?

Early waking is usually driven by light, an immature body clock, hunger, or being overtired from a too-late bedtime. Most respond to blackout, a wake clock and bedtime tweaks.

Is 5am a normal wake time for toddlers?

It's common but not unchangeable. A truly 'normal' wake is closer to 6 to 7am; with darkness and a consistent routine most early risers shift later.
